Founded in 1977 and based in London, Zed Books publishes some seventy books annually on international and Third World issues. The books are widely used in university courses throughout the world.Managed co-operatively by its worker directors and having no shareholders, Zed’s purpose is the publication and effective distribution of books that matter.Zed’s distinction lies in the fact that their conditions for publication are more than intellectual quality and wide appeal—a major concern is the political, social and ethical content of the books.
Lists include: Development and Environment Studies; Politics and Economics; Gender and Cultural Studies; Asian, Middle-Eastern, African and Latin-American Studies, with authors from a range of famous intellectuals, writers and activists such as Nawal el Sadaawi, Vandana Shiva, Samir Amin, Maria Mies, Wolfgang Sachs, Immanuel Wallerstein, Ashis Nandy and others.
